About Triple Helix

Triple Helix What's in a Name? Inspired by the notion of the double helix as the dynamic intertwining and interdependence of spiraling energies that generate life, the artists wish to draw a fanciful connection to the mutuality in the partnership of violin, cello and piano within the traditional piano trio. Each instrument, a potent voice in its own right, is entrusted by the composer with its own share of "the genetic material" of the piece. The dance of swirling strands engaged in the forming of life is mirrored here by the dance of musical lines, whose interactions are the very forming process itself for each unique piece of music.

Violinist Bayla Keyes performs a wide repertoire of concertos and recitals, as well as chamber music with Boston Musica Viva and Sonos. She was a founding member of the Muir Quartet, with whom she won the Evian and Naumburg Awards and played over a thousand concerts internationally. On the faculty of Boston University, she directs summer chamber music programs at Interlochen and Tanglewood.

Pianist Lois Shapiro has concertized as soloist and collaborative artist throughout the US and abroad, playing concerts ranging from 18th century period instrument performances to premieres of pieces written for her. A winner of New York Concert Artists Guild Award, Shapiro has recorded on Afka, Channel Classics, Centaur, MLAR and Pierrot. She is on the faculty at Longy School of Music and Wellesley College. She holds degrees from the Peabody Institute and Yale School of Music.

Cellist Rhonda Rider was a founding member of the Naumburg Award winning Lydian Quartet, with whom she concertized for over 20 years. Coordinator of Chamber Music and on the cello faculty of Boston Conservatory, she also teaches cello at Wellesley. Recipient of the Concert Artists Guild Award and numerous Copland Fund Grants, she premiered and recorded works by Carter, Harbison, Hyla and Mackey.
